SARAH was seen on Dec. 31st at the intersection of 38th and Hamilton Street, Hyattsville, MD. Her last sighting there was on Dec. 8th so she has remained in the area.

Who wants eggs?
As readers may know, a number of residents in our county are organizing to urge the County Council to lift the countywide zoning restrictions that effectively ban property-owners from keeping small numbers of hens (not roosters!) as pets in residential lots. You can learn more about them, and sign their petition, at www.pghens.com.
As we explained in a previous post, we think this is a good idea. Owners report that backyard hens make great pets, and they're more productive than dogs and cats, while making less noise and waste. Backyard hens also bring neighbors together, lead to an economic boost at small, family-owned local businesses, and help to cut greenhouse gas emissions, Chesapeake Bay runoff, and solid waste. A lot of the arguments against backyard hens are either addressed by the conditions that Prince George's Hens is proposing, or else don't hold up to scrutiny, as explained here and here.
By the way, it's not just Prince George's Hens and their thousand or so petition signatories. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and the City of Mount Rainier think that this would be a good move for the county, too.
Here in Cheverly, the Town Council invited Prince George's Hens to present at last Thursday's meeting. We hope that the Town Council will join Mount Rainier in urging the County Council to create a way for responsible residents to keep hens legally, as so many other jurisdictions (including urban centers like Baltimore and New York) have done. And we hope that the Town Council will act soon, as the County Council could take up the issue after it gets back from recess in early 2013 and will surely be interested in local municipalities' support.
After all, who wouldn't like to have some cheap, yummy, organic eggs from next door and eat them, too?

Prepare pets for Hurricane Sandy
(FEMA)Conditions are starting to deteriorate in the mid-Atlantic and will soon in the Northeast, but it’s not too late to make some last minute preparations for your pets.
The Humane Society recommends putting together an emergency plan for your animals.
Here are some top tips:
* Bring pets indoors and provide a comfortable, safe space for them during rain and severe weather;
* Make sure all pets – even those that live indoors – are wearing identification collars;
* Store at least three days worth of extra food and water for your pets and your family;
* Keep pets’ medication, first aid supplies, leash and carrier on-hand;
* Create a list of hotels or shelters that allow pets, especially if you live in an area prone to evacuation or if your home typically loses power; and
* Let family, friends and neighbors know your plan.
Also, as we learned from dog owners during Snowmageddon, having a bathroom plan for dogs can be helpful in case they are stuck inside during severe weather.

Lost dog on the Hill--UPDATE: re-united with family!
On the morning of Friday, October 5th, I was walking my two dogs along with my friends' dog who I was dogsitting. A guy came along and as he was passing us on the sidewalk, yelled that Murray, my f
riends' dog, bit him. He grabbed Murray's leash, then Murray pulled out of his collar and the guy started chasing him down the street.
After dropping my dogs inside my front door, I eventually caught up with the man, who had luckily not caught up with Murray, since he'd grabbed a long piece of metal trash he'd found on the sidewalk while in pursuit that he intended to use as a weapon on the dog. Once I caught up with him, he ended up assaulting me while screaming at me about the dog- dragging me around in the street by the arm and grabbing me in sexual places. I have filed a police report (and luckily the assault portion of the incident happened right near a police camera- plus he was stupid enough to leave the piece of metal with his fingerprints on it sitting on the ground so the police collected it as evidence).
But I don't care that much about the police finding him--- I want to find Murray. Please please please, if you're available to come help put up flyers and check all of the alleys in the neighborhood, call or text me at 202-641-0955. The sooner we get a bunch of flyers up, the sooner he'll be safe.

White dog found in Cheverly near metro station
Is anyone missing an all White Male Dog? He has a collar, no tag, and a leash is attached. The first time I saw him was on Monday evening (Oct 1), and again last night (Oct 3) he remained on our street all night, behind the Cheverly Metro. He was not friendly at first, but after we feed him he became very friendly!!
Please let me know, if anyone is missing this dog. I was able to take a few pictures. (see attached)

This fella really needs a good name - one that reflects his determination to survive, his loyalty to his caretakers and his gentle demeanor despite his circumstances.
For a $10 gift, you can suggest a name. All proceeds will go to offset the vet expenses incurred during his treatment.
We put up a web page with photos and update on the stray dog found last Wednesday at the Town Park.

Black medium sized dog wandering near St. Ambrose. Had a collar and tags but would not let me near.
Looked like he/she may have had poodle or a similar breed in him. Had that curly fur.

PG Shelter Without Power--in need of bedding
Crossposted from PG SPCA: The shelter is still out of power. The temperature is not bad so the animals are comfortable. But everything is down except for some emergency lights and AC units. What they need are towels, blankets, and sheets. They haven't been able to wash their bedding and are going to have to throw it out. So they need to restock.

Found dog Cody--returned to owner!

A white poodle mix with the name Cody on his collar is at our house after we found him at about 9:10 am this morning running in the street near the corner of 64th Ave and Jason St. a block east of St. Ambrose School. We chased him into our house so he'd be safe and I called the number I believe is on the collar tag (he was moving so hard and fast--and kept nipping at my hand-- that I had trouble telling for sure what the number was) and no one answered--so I left a message at that number, which I believe is 386-3021.. We brought Cody in so he won't get hit by a car--Our dogs are ok with him but are not too thrilled he is here, so I hope he gets picked up soon! Reply to this email or call my cell (301-802-7445) and leave a message if I can't answer just then as to when you are going to come and get him--has to be arranged since we have to be in and out this morning. If you call by 10:25 I will still be here. Would prefer not to have him here very long as he is annoying our dogs and it seems they would prefer to have him gone asap...So I hope you get this message soon!!!
