Draft Resolution on TNR

RESOLUTION ____
OF THE MAYOR AND TOWN COUNCIL
ENDORSING
TRAP-NEUTER-RETURN AS A HUMANE METHOD OF
ADDRESSING FERAL CAT POPULATIONS IN CHEVERLY

WHEREAS, there are millions of feral cats now living in the United States, including a population in Cheverly, Maryland;

WHEREAS, these populations have been largely ignored in most communities in the United States and in Cheverly, Maryland;

WHEREAS, traditional sheltering practices allow the mass killing of sheltered animals and feral cats and Prince George’s County Animal Management will destroy any feral cats that enter its facility;

WHEREAS, scientific evidence and experience internationally, in the United States, and in Prince George’s County has shown that the non-lethal trap-neuter-return method is a humane and effective means for reducing the feral cat population while providing for the welfare of feral cats;

WHEREAS, caring individuals and groups all across the globe, the country, and the county are already effectively applying non-lethal management to address feral cat populations;

WHEREAS, Cheverly embraces the importance of addressing the feral cat population humanely;

WHEREAS, May has been proclaimed Peace Month in Cheverly, and respect for all life is a condition of peace, it is especially fitting to pass this resolution in the month of May;

BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Town Council of Cheverly Maryland does hereby endorse a resident-led, non-lethal trap-neuter-return program as a humane method of addressing feral cat populations in Cheverly and in so doing better provides for the welfare of these animals while better serving our communities’ public health and safety concerns.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Town Administrator will provide a copy of this resolution to any member of the community who makes use of the Town traps, and will also provide literature about trap-neuter-return to any such residents;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution shall take effect immediately.
