The court has ruled against Prince George's Animal Management, curtailing their policies of restricting citizens' constitutional rights and liberties. This decision will likely affect policies and statutes, as well as judicial decisions all over Maryland.

You are invited to a meeting of the PGFF, SPCA, on Sunday, February 12, 2012, 2 to 4 p.m. at St. Matthew's United Methodist Church on Rt. 450 in Bowie (next to Bowie High School). The well-known Constitutional and Animal Law Attorney, E. Anne Benaroya, will talk about what Animal Management has been doing in violation of residents' civil rights, and explain the impact of the court's ruling on your day-to-day activities.

Our shot clinics are normally held on the first Sunday of each month. Exceptions may occur for weather, holidays, and for Redskins home game dates.

Found dog, now at Washington Humane--REUNITED WITH OWNER

A 10mo Rust colored poodle/spaniel(?) mix was brought into the New York Ave, WHS Shelter this morning at 5am. The information sheet said it was picked up at 54th in Cheverly. It is a beautiful dog and right now is quite traumatized by its surroundings. If anyone thinks they know who this dog is, please leave a comment or contact the shelter at 202-576-6664.

Recall: Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food

Proctor & Gamble has voluntarily recalled one production lot of Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food, due to detected aflatoxin levels above the accepted limit.

Aflatoxin is a naturally  occurring chemical byproduct from the growth of Aspergillus flavus on corn and other crops and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities. Dogs who consumed the product and exhibit symptoms including sluggishness or lethargy, reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint in the eyes or gums or diarrhea should be taken to a veterinarian.

P&G recalled 7-, 8- and 17.5-pound bags of the Iams dog food with use by or expiration dates of Feb. 5 or Feb. 6, 2013. The company said no illnesses were reported in relation to the affected product, but it was instituting the recall as a precautionary measure.

The affected bags were distributed in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Maine, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.

Those who bought the product are asked to stop using it immediately, throw it out and contact Iams for a replacement voucher.

Cheverly cats in search of homes

Nancy–orange, black and white calico cat. She is around 2 or 3 years old. She loves to be up high and watch all the things going on around her. She is not bothered by her foster family’s dog. She would do best in household where she was the only cat but she does get along with other cats. She will lay on your lap purr and fall asleep.

Booty-grey/ginger/black tabby with four white paws). She was born in September is currently about 10 weeks, but is very petite. She loves to play with her brother. The two of them are a riot to watch. She has gotten the nick name purr box because of her nonstop purring. She would be best if she was placed home with another kitten or her brother(Patches).

Patches-has white fur with black patches all over him. He was born in September and is a lively, big boy. He is full of life and enjoys playing with his sister,(Booty). He makes little squeaking noises at us. He would be best put in home with another kitten or his sister.

Lunette–black and white cat. She is about 9 months and gets along with other cats, dogs and is gentle with young children. She loves people and starts purring as soon as we start petting her. She loves to play especially with balls. She is also an avid catnip lover.

Thanksgiving Tips

Let’s face it, Thanksgiving is almost here. It’s too late to train your dog before Aunt Mabel arrives. Even if you have trained your dog, the holidays present a whole new set of challenges. Your dog is excited (or stressed). You are excited (or stressed) and have less time for your dog. There are all sorts of distractions (including food). Be patient. This too shall pass.

-Your dog will get excited when guests first arrive. Remember, in your dog's mind, Aunt Mabel could be arriving from Publisher's Clearing House or could be a vicious killer there to do harm. Before your guests are due to arrive, put your dog in another room or crate. Once your friends and relatives are in and settled, your dog will be happy to greet everyone.
-Your dog should be on leash when greeting your guests. This will help keep your dog from jumping and running around. It's is more pleasant for your dog than being yelled at for saying "hello" the way that dogs say "hello".
-Don’t assume that everyone likes dogs (even yours). Be sure to ask your guests ahead of time. It's not fair to your dog or your guests to allow your dog around people who are afraid of dogs. Your guest will feel uncomfortable all night, and your dog will get in trouble for simply be himself around the wrong person.
-If you have a timid, anxious or reactive dog, don't force him to be part of the activities. It's best to allow your dog to spend the afternoon in his crate or in a separate room with the door shut and something super yummy to chew. Be sure to do this before your guests arrive. Your dog would rather be in a safe place than around all those “scary” people.
-Teach your guests, both adults and children, how to interact with your dog. When people approach dogs head-on, look them directly in the eye, reach over them, pat them on the head or lean over them, dogs feel threatened. So, ask your guests to angle sideways and pet your dog under his chin or on his chest. If your dog looks away or backs up, respect your dog’s wishes. He is not comfortable and would rather not meet and greet.
-Being around young children is stressful for most dogs. Kids have high-pitched voices, move quickly and are unpredictable. Don’t let children crowd your dog, chase him, pick him up, hug him or get their face in your dog’s face. Let your dog go somewhere safe, where he won’t be bothered by children’s antics. Even a good dog will bite when he has had enough.
-If you have a small dog, don’t hold him when people approach. Small dogs may feel trapped and become growly if held during a greeting.
-Ask your guests NOT to feed your dog. The emergency vet offices are full during the holidays with dogs that have had too much "holiday cheer". Well-meaning friends may not know that raisins are bad for dogs or that macadamia nuts could kill your dog (think cookies). Instead, have some of your dog's healthy treats around for your guests to offer your dog.
-If you don’t want your dog to eat off the kitchen counter or beg at the dinner table, keep him out of those rooms. Put up a baby gate, or put your dog in a crate or room with a special treat – like a Kong stuffed with goodies or an interactive toy that will drop kibble if moved the right way. Don’t feel guilty: Your dog will get plenty later when he helps you clean up by eating all the crumbs.
-Don’t tempt fate. Even the most well-behaved dog will be tempted to commit "a crime of opportunity". If you're planning on cleaning up later, so you can watch the game or move to another room for dessert and coffee, make sure your dog comes (and stays) with you. If your dog does get something such as a turkey bone, offer your dog something yummy in exchange, instead of trying to reach into his mouth to get it.
-WATCH THOSE DOORS! Just as you should have your dog in another room/in a crate/on leash when your guests arrive, you need to do the same when your guests are leaving. People will be hugging, getting their left-overs to take home and putting their coats on. No one will be paying attention to how wide the front door is held open or for how long. It only takes a second for your dog to bolt out that door or to follow a guest out and keep going!

FOUND: Husky

Found: handsome, well-cared for, well-mannered husky over the weekend. It was walking along Rte. 50 (near Cheverly) with an injured foot. The dog was taken to a vet for the foot and has been treated, but now the dog needs to find its owner.

FOUND IN Cheverly, Maryland, near DC border, on Route 50, Saturday, Sept. 17th. Has likely been lost for at least a week.

Stray old dog hanging around 202 and Old Landover Road

There is a medium-sized, older white dog that we've spotted around the exit of 63rd Avenue from Cheverly, directly on the other side of 202, that has been running in that neighborhood area. I knocked on several doors trying to locate the owner and left notes, but to no avail. On Saturday, I tried to get close, but it lazily trotted away from me. I couldn't spend time going after it as I was on my way out of town that morning. He was spotted in the same area this morning, approaching people that got off of the bus.

It looks like this dog has a harness and possibly a collar with tags on it, but I haven't had time or the ability to get close enough to see. If any other animal loving folks in town are able to, maybe someone could go look around that area to see if the dog belongs to someone or if anybody knows about it. I'd hate to see it roaming loose with no help but unfortunately, at this time, myself and the other people associated with Cheverly Animal Issues, who work to help stray animals in town, just do not have the time or ability that we'd like to, or have had in the past. Any help from our fellow caring neighbors would be greatly appreciated!

This kitty has been hanging around Parkway and Kilmer Streets for the past week or so. It seems to either be lost or have been dumped. It's friendly and seems to really want to be an indoor cat. WHS dog lost in Hyattsville

Katie, a brown houndy-shepherdy-type dog with black on her ears and face, was adopted Sunday from WHS and lost the same day, near Gumwood Drive in Hyattsville. She was last seen yesterday in the woods behind Northwestern High School on Adelphi Rd.

We'll be position 47 in the parade, meeting at 9 am in the 3100 block of Laurel.

Things to bring:

* Plastic bags in case dogs need to relieve themselves along the parade route.
* Bottle of water and a fold-up bowl.
* Pretty collars, bandanas, or "adopt me" vests if appropriate.

Don't buy a pet: Look to the shelters

The story of Target, the heroic mongrel who thwarted a suicide bomber in Afghanistan, only to be euthanized by mistake in an Arizona shelter last month, evoked nationwide sorrow and outrage. But heartbreaking as that story was, a far greater tragedy is that an estimated 3 million to 4 million dogs and cats are euthanized in U.S. shelters each year. Those numbers do not include others that are feral and/or homeless. Meanwhile, Americans buy animals from puppy mills, pet shops and breeders because they are fixated on owning a particular breed. Indeed, someone I know of recently drove several hundred miles to pay $1,600 for a puppy she had never met.

I understand loving the splendid variety that selective breeding can produce. As a child, I adored our family's Irish setter and Afghan hound, and I would pore over dog, cat and horse books memorizing the different breeds. Certainly the world would be a sadder place without the diversity of Neapolitan mastiffs or Egyptian pharaoh hounds. But while some people will always breed animals as a labor of love, the national obsession with owning "purebred" (really, selectively bred) dogs is narcissistic. Ultimately, it has fatal consequences for millions of deserving animals who don't happen to be status symbols. Which leads me to support what unfortunately is a radical concept: that people should select companion animals based primarily on their temperaments.

How does one judge an animal's temperament? One excellent way to know what you're getting is to adopt from a foster family, easily found through shelters, rescue groups or Web sites such as PetFinder.com. Foster caregivers can often provide more information than breeders about an animal's personality and in-home behavior. Most shelter facilities perform some level of temperament assessment on the animals they make available for adoption, which helps to ensure a better match between the animal and its adoptive family and to reduce the number of animals returned to shelters. But not all facilities have the resources to thoroughly evaluate animals, and some animals who are shy or shelter-stressed may perform poorly on assessments yet still make excellent companions. Focusing on personality, asking the right questions and keeping an open mind are far more likely to lead to the right choice than relying on breed stereotypes.

I don't come to this issue from the moral high ground. My first two cats were pedigreed Maine coons I bought in Seattle and shipped home to the District. They were magnificent animals and wonderful companions, but I now look at that phase of my life much as a vegetarian might look back on eating veal: an ethical misstep that was the product of ignorance. What changed this pattern was finding a scruffy little white cat in a remote area of the Blue Ridge while hiking with my boyfriend one frigid November day. This tiny cat was dirty, emaciated and coughing spasmodically, but she was smart and friendly enough to follow us for a mile back to the car.

When we tried to pick her up, though, she fought like a Tasmanian devil and we had to throw a towel over her and stuff her into my backpack to get her into the car. Fang, as we jokingly named her, eventually regained her health and is, as I write, napping contentedly in my lap. She may not have the regal ruff or tufted ears of a Maine coon, but she has about the best personality of any cat I've ever met - sweet, playful, feisty and polite.

As the saying goes, all dogs have a pedigree - it's just that some we know and some we don't. There is nothing superior about a "purebred" dog or cat; in fact, mixed breeds benefit from a phenomenon known as hybrid vigor, meaning that they are less susceptible to genetic disorders and live longer on average. Sadly, many "purebred" dogs come from puppy mills, which are still legal nationwide despite being scandalously unethical operations where animals are confined to small cages their entire lives, breeding constantly under factory-like conditions. And while feral and shelter animals can certainly have significant health problems, I've seen too many friends who purchased animals from breeders end up heartbroken to discover that their pets suffered from life-threatening congenital defects.

If Americans who plan to buy a dog or cat would just take a short walk through a shelter and look at the animals' faces, they would realize the impact their decision can have. Even people who seek certain breeds because of allergies can often find them at breed-specific rescue groups. Saving an animal from starvation and homelessness is its own reward, but the beauty of rescuing an animal is that, from an emotional standpoint, it turns around and rescues you right back.

Some caring residents have taken to feeding him and are currently getting a makeshift shelter together for him to live in while he's still outdoors as severe allergies sadly prevent them from taking him inside.

Bush kitty is timid, but warming up quickly. It doesn't take much, but when he knows he can trust you, he's full of love and affection! This handsome boy is thought to be 4 months old and is on his way to be fully vetted and neutered next week.

Because of strong dedication and great persistence by some of our wonderful town residents, these two ADORABLE kittens were rescued from a hard life of living on the streets. They're a couple of months old and both are social, happy and healthy. The black one is still a bit shy at first, but warms up quickly.

We'd also like to recognize the devotion and effort of everybody involved in helping to TNR the feral mother of these two. Two lost black dogs seen in Mount Rainier

I saw two small black dogs running around at Bunker Hill and Eastern (Mt Rainier/DC border) yesterday around 2:15 p.m. Both maybe about 20 lbs? One matted up, the other not visibly so-- but i was looking at them from across eastern ave (yikes). so i wasn't that close to them. i took a pic, but the dogs were right next to each other, so in the pic there looks as though there is only one. bad pic, but see the pic below.

Someone just told me that she saw them in Mt. Rainier today (9/28/10) on 32nd between Shepherd and and Taylor.

I saw a wandering cocker spaniel (I think -- I'm lousy with dog breeds) near the Kilmer/Lake curve. The dog was quite dirty around the belly and legs -- it looked like it had been loose for a while. It was wearing a red collar. Though the dog came toward me, it repeatedly shied away when I tried to check for tags.

Twenty minutes ago, the dog was heading down the Lake hill from Kilmer. I hope it is home safe soon (if not by now).

A golden cocker spaniel was found in a wooded area just off of the park road going to Euclid Street Park. The dog is safe now and has been reunited with the owner. This dog was an outside-only dog and escaped from his yard--please keep your pets inside when unattended, so that they are safe!

We don't usually post personal tales here--but here is one from this evening.

A neighbor came by my house this evening with a lovely dog that she had found while walking her own dog. I currently have four dogs in my house (three are mine, plus a foster), and I cannot hold on to another dog right now while looking for an owner.

My neighbor has a rescue dog, too, and has met many of my fosters as well as other dogs that I've found. Together we were able to remove the dog's collar, contact the owner, and hold a reunification in the yard in about five minutes! The owner had been out looking for his girl for more than three hours and was just delighted to hear from us!

Three cheers for identification! To the owner of this lovely dog--thank you SO much for having ID on your dog! We were so happy to be able to reunite you with your pup so quickly! To my neighbor--three cheers for you for helping this dog!

URGENT: Cats in need of new home immediately!

A fellow Cheverly resident will be moving overseas soon to work for a US embassy in Africa. Unfortunately, their two cats cannot come along. They've been trying to find a no-kill shelter or someone to adopt them, with no success. Moskowicz is a male orange tabby and Velvet is a solid dark gray female with green eyes. They are siblings and the preference is to keep them together if at all possible. They are approx. 5 years old, spayed/neutered and are up to date with all vaccinations. They are NOT declawed, as they currently spend about half their time outside. Both are very affectionate, and have lived with dogs their entire life.

Beamer is coming to Cheverly tomorrow!

Meet Beamer (Miss Bea to her friends)! She's a sweet yellow lab mix who ended up in a high kill shelter in January. When the shelter was told it had to downsize from 200 to about 30 dogs in a matter of weeks, a vet took Bea in to keep her from being euthanized. Until she came to the DC area, she was living in an outside kennel with a few pals, hoping for a family of her own.

Bea is timid at first with new situations, and needs a family who will be patient with her as she settles in and learns that she's safe. She takes treats very gently, and cautiously wags her tail at any affection. She is happier with other dogs than on her own and would do best in an adult-only home.

A puppy mill is the equivalent of a factory farm for dogs. The crop, in high demand by the American public, is puppies. Another term for a puppy mill is “commercial breeder;” as the name implies, puppy mill breeders have a commercial interest in puppies—selling them is how they make a living or greatly supplement their income. The problem is, to make a profit, commercial breeders must cut corners. Dogs are kept in cages all the time, with the minimum legal space allowed (six inches larger than the dog on all sides), females are bred as often as possible, and when they are no longer able to “produce,” they are discarded. It is no life for man’s best friend.

Take Action, from Best Friends:

Puppy Mill Awareness Day is a chance to do something as small as hanging up a flyer about puppy mills at a local business, telling a friend or relative, sending a letter to the editor, or something as large as organizing your own event. If you educate just one person, you’ve participated in Puppy Mill Awareness Day, and you’ve prevented at least one puppy sale.

Here’s how to get started:

Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank needs funds to stay open--please help

EVBB (Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank) opened in Severna Park, MD in 1993 with the mission to provide a humane source of the highest quality veterinary blood products to dogs in need. Their donor base is exclusively volunteer (no caged dogs whose sole purpose in living is to donate their blood), all blood is drawn by a licensed veterinarian, and the blood products are manufactured to the highest veterinary standards. They process and distribute over 24,000 units of blood and plasma each year nationwide, and provide 24 hour emergency coverage.

Bottom line: they are there for our dogs should the unbelievable happen: trauma, cancer, clotting disorders, parvo, pancreatitis, vonWillebrands disease, or any other disease or post-operative condition that requires blood.

Due to the declining economy, blood needs have also decreased (tho EVBB still processed blood should the need arise). Because of this, they are $500,000 in debt. They will close their doors Nov. 1, 2010 if they do not have an influx of money to pay these debts.

What can you do?

1) Go to www.evbb.com and donate $1. There is an easy PayPal button on the home page, and EVBB will receive 93 cents of every $1 donated.

2) Send this email to 20 of your dog-loving friends. You have permission to cross-post this to any and all dog groups, rescues, training groups, anything dog related or to anyone whom you think may be able to help.

3) Publicize this email letter in your Club's newsletter or e-letters.

We believe we dog guardians and dog lovers have the power to keep EVBB's doors open. We also believe in the power of $1 donations and the power of email and our hearts to spread word of their need. Dr Ann has only been paid sporadically over the last 2 years, many of the staff have been let go, and others volunteer their services. They are tired now, tho.

Cocker spaniel lost again! Have you seen him?

Rubio got away from his owner again and has been missing since Sunday, the 25th. He was last seen at his home near the Walmart on 450. The last time he went missing, he was found in Cheverly, on Landover road. He could possibly be anywhere in between, if not in a different direction all together.

A three-legged female kitty with medium length, black and white hair was found near Good Hope Road in Silver Spring. She was taken to the shelter on 7/19. Ink is a big black dog with drop ears and a big head. He answers to Ink or Inkie. He is a older dog. He is needs medicine. Ink was last seen in his front yard at 6:30pm on 12/16/09. He lives by the Cheverly Howard Johnson Motel. Ink is greatly missed by his family.

Our dog Rosie - on her first day home from the shelter - managed to back out of her new collar and went for a run. Making it worse, she's still pretty avoidant of people / timid, and doesn't yet respond to her name.

National Pet Fire Safety Day is July 15

Promote pet fire safety in your community

An estimated 500,000 pets are affected annually by home fires, and a new data analysis by the National Fire Protection Association shows that nearly 1,000 house fires each year are accidentally started by the homeowners’ pets. The National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) is joining ADT Security Services and the American Kennel Club® (AKC) for the third annual National Pet Fire Safety Day on July 15 to spread awareness about how to prevent pets from starting home fires and keep pets safe in the event of an emergency.

“Not many pet owners realize that their pet can actually be the cause of a devastating fire,” said AKC spokesperson Lisa Peterson. “Simple preventative measures, such as flameless candles and removing stove knobs when leaving the house, can mean the difference between life and death for your four-legged friends.”

Chris and Kay Wardlow of Oklahoma know that all too well. Their curious dog Lucy was home alone and spied a cake on the stove top. As Lucy tried to get a taste, her paw accidentally hit the stove knob and turned on the gas burner that was under the cake pan. Within minutes, the house was filled with smoke, triggering the Wardlow’s ADT monitored smoke detector. Firefighters were called to the scene and Lucy was rescued.

“Planning for unexpected emergencies like home fires and taking these precautions are an integral part of responsible dog ownership,” Peterson said.

Fire departments across the country are encouraged to utilize Pet Fire Safety Day on July 15 to spread pet fire safety messages in your community. The following tips can be used to help educate pet owners on how to prevent their beloved pet from starting a fire, as well as how to keep their pets safe.

Prevent your pet from starting fires

* Extinguish open flames - Pets are generally curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles, or even a fire in your fireplace. Ensure your pet is not left unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving your home.
* Remove stove knobs - Be sure to remove stove knobs or protect them with covers before leaving the house – a stove or cook top is the number one piece of equipment involved in your pet starting a fire.
* Invest in flameless candles – These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame, and take the danger out of your pet knocking over a candle. Cats are notorious for starting fires when their tails turn over lit candles.
* Beware of water bowls on wooden decks – Do not leave a glass water bowl for your pet outside on a wooden deck. The sun’s rays when filtered through the glass and water can actually heat up and ignite the wooden deck beneath it. Choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls instead.
* Pet proof the home - Take a walk around your home and look for areas where pets might start fires inadvertently, such as loose wires and other potential hazards.

Keep your pets safe

* Keep pets near entrances when away from home – When leaving pets home alone, keep them in areas or rooms near entrances where firefighters can easily find them.
* Secure young pets - Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home, such as in crates or behind baby gates in secure areas.
* Practice escape routes with pets – Keep collars and leashes at the ready in case you have to evacuate quickly with your pet or firefighters need to rescue your pet.
* Consider using monitored smoke detection services – As an added layer of protection beyond battery-operated smoke alarms, smoke detectors connected to a monitoring center help save pets who can’t escape when left home alone.
* Affix a pet alert window cling – Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating your pets. Make sure to keep the number of pets listed on them updated.

The NVFC has a listing of fire departments across the nation where pet owners can obtain a free pet alert window cling as part of National Pet Fire Safety Day. There's a litter of kittens in our Town that needs your help! This is a litter of young ones who need a foster home--somewhere where they can learn that people are great and grow up to be happy, healthy, social cats!

All you need is a spare room or bathroom! Once there's a foster, we can start trapping the cats and work to get them into rescue. Please consider taking a pair of kittens into you home and giving them a chance to have a family of their own, away from scary things like cars!
